My husband, Joe, looks up from his computer and I see the look in his eyes. He's in a far off land right now...creating. After a few moments he looks back at his computer, types a few keystrokes and intently looks at the screen. Once again he looks up and I can see he is back into that far off land.
To the untrained eye it would appear he is just looking at the wall of our living room or out the window as if he just heard someone passing by while walking their dog. However, to me, his wife and partner of many years, I recognize the look; he is off in a distant land right now.... creating. I know it is only a matter of time until I hear about the idea that is formulating. At that point, he will share his idea using words to bring it into form and showing me pictures that were instrumental in the spark that led to the new project idea.
Before long he will be telling me about the materials he has on hand already to begin the project and which ones he will need to purchase to get this idea off the ground. He has a decent accrual of tools and materials already from previous projects but new projects typically mean a few new materials and tools. I feel privileged to be able to hear his ideas in this beginning state and I love to watch it develop and take form and see it's final outcome. The project takes diligence but he seems to enjoy the process and the give and take of discovery, creation and application. I recognize that it's not only about the final outcome for him but it is just as much about the creation process and all it brings with it. He truly finds as much joy in the process as he does with the final creation.
This time the project is night lights. That's right night lights. Not just any old regular night light but Joe-inspired creative night lights , YourNiqueGifts at Etsy.com. While he may begin by seeing a picture about something, it ends up being only the catalyst from which he will springboard. He is a Registered Nurse by day and a genius creator by weekend and night.
Having the right materials and tools are paramount to the creation coming out as imagined.
Watching him I realize that his project work and my coaching work are so similar. When people come to me they generally feel frustrated or stuck in an area(s) of life. Whether it's job, family or relationships there is something they feel they can no longer work through or find the answers to on their own. Inside they know something needs to change but they are out of ideas and are ready for some new insights and tools to help create something different in their lives.
Tools are used to either create something new or take something that is already in existence and repair it or refashion it. The builder has his hammer, nails and screwdriver. The writer has her notebook, pen and computer. The painter has her brushes, paint and canvas. Well, you get the idea.
The right tools at the right time used in the right way make all the difference. When my clients come to me, we are able to utilize simple yet effective tools to assist in creating something more desired out of their situation. I not only suggest the most effective tool for them but also share about the tool itself and why it is so useful given their situation. Their part is to utilize the tool as needed. We check back in and on we go until the creation has taken shape and is a thing of beauty in its own right or in coaching terms the momentum of the situation shifts and is more aligned with what they desire for their life.
The objective is to assist the client in recognizing that it's not all about the outcome, that there is a process with everything. To help them recognize that having the right tools makes a difference. As we apply principles and tools, my client is able to actually see and recognize the changes taking place. This process will take them from a place of feeling like they are holding their breath waiting for the other shoe to drop to being able to actually enjoy the process of discovery, creation and application. Just like my Genius Creator Joe they will find it is just as much about the creation process as it is about the outcome.
Tools don't have to be complex. In fact most of the time the tools themselves are very simple. It is learning what the tool was designed for and implementing that learning during the project that helps to bring about the desired result.
Yes, I truly believe the work that Genius Creator Joe and I do are very similar after all.
